About the Center

 The Center for NYC Neighborhoods (the “Center”) promotes and protects affordable homeownership in New York so that middle- and working-class families are able to build strong, thriving communities. Established by public and private partners, the Center meets the diverse needs of homeowners throughout New York State by offering free, high-quality housing services. The Center’s current projects support our policy goals and help to keep homeownership affordable by responding to the ongoing effects of the foreclosure crisis, the rising cost of homeownership, predatory scams, rising sea levels, and more extreme weather.

 Position summary

We are looking for an External Relations Manager who is driven to work for a mission-oriented organization and has the skills to expand our fundraising and income generation through the strategic use of impact storytelling, events, and other cultivation strategies.  The External Relations Manager is is an exempt position that reports to the Vice President for Development & External Affairs.

 Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  •  Manage logistics and fundraising implementation for 2-3 events annually: 1) Affordable Homeownership Summit, a programmatic event drawing approximately 250 attendees; 2) growing a fundraising event first held in 2018 into an annual event, and 3) a funder breakfast, a new event for the Center that this position would develop.
  • Lead development of all fundraising, cultivation, and sponsorship materials and collateral, in collaboration with the Fundraising and Communications teams, ensuring high standards for all materials. Projects to include: creation of an organizational one-pager tailored for donors and prospects; creation of a case statement about our impact and demand for services, in coordination with our policy and research team; creation of Donor profiles (why people like to support our work / impact); repositioning the Annual Report to tell a story of impact across programs and offer opportunities for investment that speaks to donors, funders, and other influencers; investigating ROI and use of a donor newsletter or donor page on the website
  • Advance fundraising objectives through impact storytelling by interviewing homeowners and others, creating and editing written content for priority audiences and platforms, aligning story pipeline with outlets and audiences the Center wants to reach in order to generate new and increased financial support
  • Work with VP to discuss and implement yearly and multi-year funding goals
  • Assist the VP in putting together funding proposals and with donor cultivation, as needed
  • Maintain accurate donor records and capture donor communication, outreach deadlines, and other relevant information in Salesforce
  • Oversee gift collection and acknowledgement activities in alignment with the finance staff, including tracking donations and sending gift acknowledgements
  • Other tasks and duties reasonably related to job responsibilities

Required Skills & Qualifications

  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills; ability to communicate ideas and information, confidently, effectively and compellingly to both internal and external stakeholders
  • Project management skills and a proven ability to manage and prioritize multiple projects; experience using Asana as a project management tool is desired
  • Bachelor’s degree strongly preferred
  • 2-4 years of development or communications work or related experience
  • Experience planning and facilitating small to medium sized events
  • Experience with goal setting, establishing, tracking, and reporting against KPIs
  • Judgment and understanding regarding working with priority audiences including Board members, funders, and potential donors
  • Proactive attitude, out of the box thinking, and ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment
  • High level proficiency with Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and other standard office tools required
  • Passion and commitment to a mission oriented organization required; affinity for homeownership and housing is preferred
  • Experience conducting interviews, oral histories, or journalism helpful
  • Proficiency in Salesforce or other CRM system
  • Sense of humor
